Research Interest The cerebral cortex is a thin sheet (2mm thin) of densely packed neuronal and glia cells. The cortical mantle is divided horizontally into cortical layers and vertically into areas and columns. Such an organization of the cerebral cortex is the basis of our cognitive function.
To understand the complexity of the anatomical organization of the cerebral cortex, I started to study the ontogenetic and evolutionary development of the cerebral cortex. Thereafter, I explored the functional aspects of the cerebral cortex using the visual system in awake, behaving monkeys as a model. My current research is focusses on building biological realistic models. With computational models one can study and compute the dynamics and complexity of the cerebral cortex in detail; something what cannot be done in animals or humans.
